Khabarnegaran.info: Khosro Vali zadeh a veteran journalist and sport writer, is a graduate from School of media studies (Daneshkadeh Khabar). He started his career as a journalist in 1979 with Islamic republic News agency (Irna) and since then he’s been working in press, radio and many news agencies. He also wrote the first framework for Iran Varzeshi (Iran Sport) one of the first, all colored sport magazines in Iran. In June 2014 he made a speech about problems regarding sport writing in Tehran’s free journalists association.
He pointed out the need of sport press in country and said:" Due to the fact that sports had extended in many fields after the Islamic revolution (1979) and specially after the war between Iran and Iraq , the need of papers in sport fields were in society and young people , but I think sport press has way too many issues and problems "
He continued with a look at his memories: " in my first years of activity no matter for the agency or a paper , when we were set to go to a sport gathering , we could really see the great legends of the sports medias , people like Ardeshir Laroodi , Parviz Zahedi , Manouchehr Zandi , Fereidoun Sheibani , Hossein Khansari and so many other faces , these people has given so much to sport media . when you sat beside them , you could learn so much .
He believes that the unrestrained increase of the publications was the reason there are so many untrained people in this field and that’s why the quality is not a priority in sport papers these days.
" some of the people in this job has no academic or writing experience , most of them got their job with a connection to the editor in chief or director of a paper , and unfortunately , since they don’t have a good income , they start making money from Illegitimate ways." He said about today’s sports writers.
He proposed a supervising program: "unfortunately there is little supervision on sport papers. There has never been a note to a paper from ministry of culture about their low quality on stories. We can say there’s almost no red line in sport papers.
He expressed his disappointment and continued: "in sport medias we made our audiences so objective, now if we tend to work on a more subjective matter, nobody wants to read it. If I talk about serious matters on the radio they blame and agonize me and say that the audiences don’t like such stuff. Who made the audience like this? We did. We give them reasons to like something or not.
He criticizes the lack of faces among sport writers : " my question is , where there’s no more faces like Houshang Bagheri , Ardeshir Laroudi or another Sheibani . at those days , sport papers were few .there were "Keyhan Varzeshi" (sport Keyhan) ,and "Donyaye Varzeshi" (world of sport ).some Papers like Keyhan , Ayandegan and Etela’at had sports layouts once in a while too. Why with the increase of sport medias there are no good sport writers.
He believes that the minister of culture should interfere at this matter personally:" recently one of the journalists talked to me about this matter and I said maybe it’s really time for minister to interfere, for example having a meeting with the director of papers once or twice a month and use excitation and promotion strategy on them.
He pointed out the technical weaknesses in sport writing field: "now a days we read some pieces which in 10 sentences you can’t find a single verb. Most of the writers don’t know the first principles of news writing but since they print everything they think they do perfect. "
At the End this sport journalist expressed his hope for a positive action from journalists association on this matter : " I hope the association can be effective on this matter . there’s so many years we have a society called the society of sport reporters, photographers and writers and I was once one of the directorial member but unfortunately no action regarding the improvement in quality of sports press. Least we can do is to ask School of Media Studies or Payame Noor university to open some news writing courses . any way I hope the ministry and the journalists association do something to improve the quality of news writing at this field.
Khabarnegaran.info-Niki Azad: How is life for Iranian journalists after prison? Does their attitude toward their journalism – the profession that put them in jail – change? Are they more conservative than before? Or bolder?
Khabarnegaran – Niki Azad: He has been put in jail three times for his journalist writing, though he says that jail has not made him feel disappointed with the profession of journalism.
