Supreme Leader’s Candidate; From Media Justice to Second Ahmadinejad

11 June 2013

Translated by: Rose Arjmand

Khabarnegaran.info – What to Saeed Jalili’s fan website have to say for this conservative presidential candidate? How do they run his campaigns? How do they want to impress voters? There various website writing about him, namelyHayat-e Tayebe (pious life), Hamaseh Siasi (political epic), Moghavemat va Ramz-e Pishraft (Resistance and Secret of Success) and Sadid Online (Righteous Online) write about his political believes specially prior to the election.

A glance at these websites and blogs gives a reader such idea: Saeed Jalili is a war veteran that lost a leg in Iran-Iraq war. He is now serving a negotiator in the Iranian nuclear program case and does not pay the west to recognize Iran’s rights in this case. All the websites call Jalili ‘the man of resistance.’ Jalili does not compromise. When it comes to ideology, Saeedl Jalili is stubborn, inflexible, and anti-America. Jalili’s loyalty to velayat-e faqih (ruling of jurisprudence) is also another point much pinpointed by his fans.

Media Justice and 900 blogs campaigning for Jalili

“Media Justice” is one of Jalili’s significant mottos. That explains why we hear a lot about the number of blogs campaigning for him. The official records suggest more than 900 blog were launch to support Jalili’s candidacy. He also promised to launch a blog for each city in the country.

There are also official websites that were exclusively launched for his presidential election campaign. There are a number of news website that support him unofficially. Fars News Agency, affiliated to Islamic Republic Guards Corporation (IRGC), has obviously shown its support for Saeed Jalili and covering the latest update on his speeches regarding his campaign. The Fars News Agency’s support from Jalili is very obvious because the rest of the candidates do enjoy such support. The Raja News Website also does deprive Saeed Jalili of its support.

The majority of news in this website is related to Jalili. For instance the main headline of the website on the 26 of May read: “he resistance option has the best luck in elections”. The body of the news directly introduced Jalili as the symbol of resistance. The op-ed column of the website also offers a few articles with similar titles: “Jalili, the Man of Economic War” “To What Extends Jalili is Similar to Ahmadinejad?” The first conference held parallel to Jalili’s campaign was centered on him being a symbol of resistance. The blue poster of the campaign read “We Are Standing Until the End.” The message of resistance becomes clearer with Jalili’s fan renting billboards and installing posters reading “No Compromise, No Surrender, We Are Jalili’s Fans.”

Political Epic in Jalili’s fans’ websites

The Supreme Leader of Islamic Republic of Iran named the current Iranian year (started March 21) the “Year of Political and Economic Epic.” This motto has been frequently heard from presidential candidates. Among the candidates’ fans, Jalili’s campaigners relate the motto directly to him as a creator of the political epic. They also strongly point that Jalili is Ayatollah Khamenei’s favorite candidate. They launched a website with the same title: Hamaseh Siasi (Political Epic).

Hamaseh Siasi constantly updates Jalili’s public schedule and his debates dates on Islamic Republic Broadcasting Corporation (IRIB). The website insists that Jalili is the Leader’s force and covers much of the leader – Jalili news. Hamaseh Siasi quoted Jalili saying: “a president must follow the Supreme Leader both in words and acts. I was asked what would happen if my opinion was different than that of the Supreme Leader’s. The answer is very clear. In the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Supreme Leader has the final say in everything.”

Is Jalili another Ahmadinejad?

In such days, Ayatollah Khamenei does not seem to be Jalili’s only ally. Jalili has been constantly compared to Ahmadinejad. Ahmadinejad spoke out a lot about Mashaei’s candidacy. He even went far enough to say that he would follow Mashaei’s disqualification case directly from Ayatollah Khamenei’s side. However, Mashaei was disqualified and Ahmadinejad did nothing. Some interpreted Ahmadinejad’s silence as a sign that Jalili is basically his candidate.

A journalist asked Bagheri, head of Saeed Jalili’s campaign, if Jalili would follow Ahmadinejad’s dialogue in his two terms (2005 – 2013). Bagheri answered: “no. Mr. Jalili will follow the revolution dialogue. Jalili is like no other candidate, so he should not be compared to any one.”

Now we only can wait and see to what extend Jalili is different from Ahmadinejad. Some people wonder if Ayatollah Khamenei finds Jalili his favorte candidate or others?
